In our lives a continuous rhythm is at work between opposite poles. We move through day and night, summer and winter, effort and rest, yin and yang. All over the world special techniques, rituals, recipes, aromas and exercises have been developed to help us stay in tune with this continuous flow. These traditions form the inspiration for Relaxing Rituals.

The yogis of India have elevated relaxation to an art form. According to Ayurveda, an Indian science concerned with health, we are connected with the universe's energy through chakras or energy knots along the spine. Massage is considered beneficial either to calm down and relax or to reload and generate new energy. For relaxation, the direction of the massage is outwards.

The Japanese have a reputation as hard workers. They also have a rich tradition when it comes to relaxing and recharging. Bathing plays an important role. The essence of Japanese bathing can be found in the mountains with their many natural hot springs. Exquisite hinoki-wood is often used for the bathtubs. The outdoor baths are spectacular, with views towards the hills or a waterfall.

An old mural in Egypt depicts a scene of Queen Touy in her bath. She is attended by four female servants. The first one pours water over her body, the second one rubs her skin, the third one prepares her clothing and jewelry and the fourth one is offering her a fragrant flower. This indicates that fragrances were highly valued in those days and considered an integral part of the bathing ritual.

In ancient China, fragrances and perfumes were used in accordance with the season. They served to accompany musical events, they were used during meditation and played an important role in courting. Both men and women used perfume, but in very discrete ways in order not to overwhelm its subtle effects.

For all these rituals, natural ingredients were used, like frangipani, ylang ylang, orange blossom, lotus flower and rice milk. Each of these ingredients possesses specific relaxing properties and fragrances. You will find them in our rich bodymilks, relaxing massage oils, teabags for the bath, and relaxing masks, in our Relaxing Rituals line of products.
