One of the most popular beauty trends of the moment is using bright and uniquely-coloured lipstick to make your mouth pop. It’s been embraced by many A-listers as of late, including everybody from Rihanna to Emma Stone to Salma Hayek. And because these ladies all have vastly different skin tones, one thing should be obvious: no matter what your complexion, anybody can rock a bold lip.
So don’t be nervous about changing up your lipstick routine—pick out a favourite colour, use the following tips, and wear it with pride!
Are you cool (or warm?)
The first thing to consider when you’re selecting a bright lip colour is whether your skin has warm or cool undertones. Colours that contain more bluish hues go well with cool complexions, while ones with a yellow or orange tint pair well with warmer complexions. If you’re not sure where you fall on the scale, examine the veins on the inside of your wrist. If they appear blue, then you have a cool skin tone and if they seem greenish, you have a warm-toned complexion.
Having trouble making the distinction? This means you’re neutral-toned, and you’re lucky enough to be able to pull off any colour.
Be easy on the eyes
Whenever you wear a dramatic lipstick, be sure to tone down the rest of your make-up look. It should be all about the lips, which means you should take it easy on things like eyeshadow, eyeliner and blush. Try to make these appear as natural and neutral as possible, to keep the focus on your mouth. Otherwise you won’t be enhancing your natural beauty, you’ll be hiding it behind too much make-up.
Make sure you’re moisturised
Dry, chapped lips don’t look nice in any circumstance, but when you’re emphasising them with a bright lipstick, every flaw is magnified. Therefore it’s essential that you keep your lips moisturised before applying your daring new shade. We suggest Rituals’ Smooth Operator lip balm, which contains intensely hydrating shea butter, vitamin E and refreshing eucalyptus.
Build a foundation
When wearing a bright shade of lipstick, it’s very important that it is meticulously applied. One way to do this is by first applying a layer of foundation or concealer onto your lips, so that you can be certain that the colour is evenly saturated and will stay put for hours.
This is probably the most important rule of all. If you’re feeling timid about that new fuchsia you almost didn’t buy, practice wearing it around the house. Soon you’ll be confident enough to let the whole world see how fantastic you look.
