Live healthily and be happy! You can keep your skin glowing at any age by eating the right nutrients, sleeping well, and practicing a holistic skin care ritual that cleanses, moisturizes and protects.
Rituals’ resident skin care expert Louisa Maaldrink has been working in beauty product development for over 10 years—so she knows all about how to maintain a healthy, beautiful complexion.
As Category Manager in the innovation team, she is responsible for developing skin care, hair care and men’s grooming products at Rituals Headquarters. And judging by how surprised her colleagues were that she recently turned 40, we know that she must practice what she preaches! We sat down with Louisa recently to learn the secrets to caring for (and perhaps more importantly) loving the skin you’re in.
In your expert opinion, what is the single most important thing we can do to get the best skin possible?
Live healthily and be happy! You can keep your skin glowing at any age by eating the right nutrients, sleeping well, and practicing a holistic skin care ritual that cleanses, moisturizes and protects. Exercise is also really key, as it stimulates the lymphatic system and increases circulation, giving you an immediate natural glow.
We like the sound of that! But what are some behaviours or mistakes that we should avoid if we want that gorgeous glow?
Too much exposure to the sun, smoking, drinking alcohol and eating lots of sugar all impact the skin. A big mistake a lot of people make is not cleansing properly. During my career I have worked with some amazing dermatologists, and they always say a good cleansing will give other treatments a better result. If you don’t cleanse thoroughly, the skin cannot absorb the active properties of serum or day cream.
Speaking of treatments, which skin care product is at the top of your recommendation list?
Rituals Sensational Soft Cleanser—I was very happy to discover this when I started working at Rituals. Unlike harsher products, it doesn’t dry your skin out. It’s an oil-based cleanser that you massage into your skin every morning and evening. It removes all of the daily debris and your make-up in a very gentle way, without stripping the skin. By massaging it into the skin, it allows you to take a little moment for yourself, to really relax, slow down and be present in the moment.
That’s what we’re all about at Rituals. Other than the cleanser, is there anything else we simply must add to our skin care regimen?
The new Wonder Mask is a great deep cleanse which I do weekly. The bamboo charcoal powder helps to remove impurities and to stimulate cell renewal. You add water to the powder and then mix it yourself in the little cup. You then apply this with a brush to your face, which in itself feels like a proper facial. A great weekend relaxing ritual!
Masks do seem to be gaining popularity in the beauty world lately. What are some other trends that you’ve noticed in the field?
More people are taking me-time, really allowing themselves to slow down and relax. Treating their skin with kindness and giving it the attention it deserves. Giving back and focusing on sustainability is also something on everybody’s mind.
And as more people are living in cities than ever before, the topic of urban pollution is trending, because people are starting to understand how tiny particulate matter can penetrate the skin and cause aging. Protecting the skin is therefore important.
Smile and the world smiles back.
That is interesting. We’ve also noticed that facial massage is becoming popular. How do you feel about it?
I love facial massage as it allows me to really switch off from a busy day, slow down, breathe deep and really relax. A little ´me time.´ The ritual of gently massaging the skin increases blood flow and oxygen flow, increasing collagen production. It really makes a difference and I try to do it at least a couple of evenings a week.
Great advice. Any final words for our readers from Rituals’ resident expert with the youthful, glowing skin?
In general, take care of your skin by having a good routine and by spending time on your skin ritual.
Skin ages naturally, so I think it is really important to be okay with this and to be comfortable in your own skin. I think wrinkles are beautiful and would tell everybody to embrace them. I prefer to think of them as laugh lines. My mum used to say, (and I think this is also a great motto for skin care) “smile and the world smiles back.” If you are happy, this will radiate from you and make you beautiful.
