The word "luxury" on a label tells you almost nothing on its own. What you can judge is threefold: the fragrance composition, the quality and evenness of the burn, and the vessel itself. 

Start with the scent – it's the hardest part to get right. Our home fragrances are created with the world's best perfumers, so a scent is built in layers rather than a single flat note. Think of it as a home perfume, not just a scented candle. A considered candle also earns its keep by burning cleanly and holding its fragrance across its whole life, not just the first hour. Our signature scents are each rooted in a mood. Wild Fig brings a sweet, earthy warmth: ripe Italian fig mingled with violet and spiced clove, rounded off with creamy cocoa. Choosing the right candle for every room 

Not every scent suits every space, and matching fragrance and size to the room is where a home starts to feel considered. Think about how you use each space before you choose. 

Fresher, lighter fragrances tend to suit kitchens and bathrooms, where you want a clean lift. Warmer, woody notes come into their own in living rooms and bedrooms in the evening, when you're winding down. Reach for larger candles in open-plan spaces that need more presence, and smaller ones in intimate corners. Getting the most from your candle  

A luxury candle rewards a little care, and since you already burn candles, we'll skip the lecture and get to what protects the fragrance and the burn. 

Let the first burn melt the wax all the way to the edges before you blow it out; this is what prevents tunnelling, where only the centre sinks and leaves a wasted rim. Trim the wick to about 6mm before each lighting, and keep the wax pool clear of any debris. Burn in sessions of up to four hours, and stop when around 10mm of wax remains. What is candle tunnelling and how do you prevent it? 

Tunnelling is when only the wax around the wick melts, leaving a hard rim of unused wax and a shrinking flame. You prevent it by giving that very first burn enough time to melt the whole surface out to the edges. 

How do you make a luxury candle last longer? 

Trim the wick before each lighting, keep the wax pool clear, and burn in sessions of up to four hours. Stop at around 10mm of remaining wax, and the fragrance stays worth lighting right to the end.
