Discover the benefits of ‘Abhyanga’ self-massage

Let’s be real: treating yourself to a professional massage is amazing. It melts away stress, eases weird aches, and floods your brain with oxytocin (the 'hug hormone') and serotonin (the 'happiness hormone'). The catch? It’s expensive. But before you give up on your spa dreams, there’s a surprisingly easy, zero-cost alternative: self-massage. Specifically, you should know about Abhyanga – a traditional Ayurvedic practice that literally translates to "massage of the whole body."

The perks of a daily massage routine aren't just in your head; there’s some serious science behind it. When you massage your own skin, you stimulate pressure receptors that directly activate your vagus nerve. If you haven't heard of it, the vagus nerve is basically the command centre for your body's "rest and digest" system.

As highlighted by TIME Magazinekicking this nerve into gear slows your heart rate and creates a meditation-like calm, causing a major drop in cortisol (the stress hormone) while boosting those feel-good chemicals. Along with chilling you out, it also improves digestion, boosts circulation, and helps your muscles recover faster.

Adding a quick self-massage to your daily routine could make a massive difference. With regular practice, you’ll notice better digestion, way less muscle tension, and just a lighter feeling throughout the day. Taking a few minutes to physically tune in to your body helps you figure out what it actually needs. You might even notice a cool domino effect – suddenly, you naturally want to eat a little healthier and move your body more intuitively.

It's a simple habit that totally upgrades how you take care of yourself. Give Abhyanga a try with an open mind. You’ve got literally nothing to lose, and a whole lot of chill to gain. Here’s how:

Follow these steps for Abhyanga

  1. Set the vibe. To get the most out of your massage, find a warm, peaceful space (like your bathroom). Choose a body oil that best suits your skin's needs.
  2. Warm your oil. Place your sealed bottle of oil in a bowl of hot water to heat it up. Apply a drop to your wrist to test the temperature – make sure it's warm, but not too hot!
  3. Start at the top. Rub a few drops of warm oil between your palms. Massage your temples and scalp for a couple of minutes to release tension.
  4. Move to your face. Using gentle, circular motions, massage your forehead, ears, cheeks, and jaw.
  5. Work your way down. Continue moving downwards, massaging your whole body in a circular motion, focussing on your joints and making larger circular movements between them.
  6. Finish with your feet. Give your feet a good massage last. Once you're done, let the oil soak into your skin for about 15-20 minutes.
  7. Rinse off. Hop into a nice, warm shower to rinse off the excess oil, then gently pat yourself dry with a towel.
