Midsummer glow: how to master the 'wet-look' trend naturally

Earlier this year, the make-up goddesses of the world looked into their crystal balls and made the prediction: for summer 2026, the wet-look is back. But this time, with a new set of rules. Not to be confused with the glossy glow of summers past, this shine looks like it’s radiating from within. A perfect accomplice to the slick-back hair that has permanently cemented itself in it-girl territory, it’s less party girl leaving a club at 3am, more bond girl emerging from a lake at golden hour. The finish we're after is luminous, breathable, and above all, skin that looks like it genuinely belongs to you.

Midsummer glow: how to master the 'wet-look' trend naturally

The good news? It’s simpler than it sounds. Think of it as the inverse of no make-up make-up. This is about doing the bare minimum to look like you spent your entire morning on an elaborate skincare routine. The right products make the illusion effortless. Welcome to Expensive Skin, summer 2026's most covetable complexion trend.

The Prep: Glow from within

“Start with skin health, not shimmer,” advises celebrated make-up artist Polly Vincent “Radiance should come from the skin itself. When skin is smooth and well hydrated, light reflects beautifully which in turn eliminates the need for heavy highlighter.” Look for moisturisers and serums with lightweight, breathable textures that will layer perfectly under make-up without pilling. “A well-formulated vitamin C is essential for summer glow”, says Polly.

The Base: Bye glass skin, hello cloud skin

The era of high-shine, shellacked glass skin is over. What replaced it on the SS26 runways and has now filtered down into beauty editors’ morning routines is something make-up artists are calling Cloud Skin: a softly blurred, radiant complexion that looks hydrated and alive rather than lacquered. Opt for skin tints and sheer foundations over full-coverage formulas, focusing product only where it’s needed and leaving the rest of the skin to breathe.

The key is in the application as much as the formula. Reach for a moisturising skin tint with a whisper of coverage that lets your natural texture show through, and use a damp sponge or fingertips rather than a brush, the warmth and moisture helps everything melt in. For more coverage without sacrificing that skin-like quality, try mixing your foundation with a drop of moisturiser to add a sheer lightweight look. This is the base that makes everything else work.

Targeted Glossing: Shine with intention

There’s one thing a lot of people get wrong with the wet-look: they apply shine everywhere and wonder why it looks more greasy than glowing. The trick is restraint. “Instead of glossing the entire face, apply glow where light naturally hits, think cheekbones, brow bones and the cupid’s bow” explains Polly.

This technique has been all over the red carpet this year, most visibly in the slicked-back, skin-forward looks that have dominated awards season. A balm-texture product pressed gently (not swept) onto these areas creates the illusion that the light is coming from beneath your skin rather than sitting on top of it. It's the difference between looking dewy and overdone. One drop in the right place goes further than heaps of highlighter applied without intention.

Breathable Textures: The lighter the better

If Cloud Skin is the look, breathable texture is the method. “Forget heavy foundations: 2026 is the year of skincare-first makeup and breathable beauty,’ explains award-winning skin specialist Kelly Rose “Think tinted gels, hydrating skin tints, and sheer balms that blur imperfections while letting your natural skin shine. This is all about skin that feels healthy, not weighed down.” Test the texture before you apply: if it feels weightless on your fingertip, it should feel weightless on your face at 3 PM in 30-degree heat. Swap powder blushes for cream or liquid formulas that melt into the skin. The same goes for eye products: a clear gloss on the lid, a sheer wash of colour, rather than a built-up eyeshadow.

Strategic powdering: The surprise secret weapon

Powder has a bad rep in the glow-obsessed beauty era, but used correctly it's actually the cherry on top - the final touch that makes the whole wet-look work. The mistake? Applying it everywhere. Instead, dust a translucent ultra-blur powder only across the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) whilst keeping the outer perimeter of your face untouched. This contrast has a sculpting effect in the light.
