The Art of Soulful Living: What is love?

This month our focus is on love. The glue that binds us and that brings peace and joy to the world. Bring it into your life with our deep dive

Our philosophy, The Art of Soulful Living is brought to life through our compass, that acts as a guide to personal wellbeing. This month, we are focusing on Love, the 13th point that nestles deliberately at the heart of our compass. For we see love as both the foundation of each of the themes, as well as the glue that holds them all together.

Love is a curious thing. There is not one act in the world that has not been accomplished in the name of love. Millions of books, poems, movies, and songs have been written about love. Monuments have been built in the name of love, wars have been fought over it; lives have been lost and lives are being created in the spirit of love. It is the all-encompassing circle of emotional energy that can move in any direction you choose. Jealousy, hatred, fear, sadness, grief, and pain on one side of its spectrum; compassion, kindness, passion, gratitude, forgiveness, and joy on the other.

Love is the true essence of life, without love there would be no meaning in anything we do or pursue. Love propels us forward to fulfil our dreams, passions and desires, and defines our values and ethics. But most of all love is what connects us to each other. It creates bonds and cements relationships with trust and understanding. It helps us to heal from pain and overcome our differences.

Love is also what makes us rise above ourselves and do greater things than we ever thought possible. And yet even though love is the universal language that all humans can feel, see, and experience it remains as elusive as an unsolvable mystery. Such as why we experience love at first sight with some but not with everyone? Why we love specific foods and dislike others? And why is it that we are so touched by a piece of music that it moves us to tears, while some songs can get on our nerves? We do not really know, do we? But what we do know is that love feels incredibly good. And we intuitively know we are not whole without it.

Even though we will probably never fully understand its workings we would do almost anything to love and be loved. Because love can give you a feeling of belonging and safety, of strength and calm and of happiness and joy. And while some of us spend our whole live chasing after it, it is anchored inside from the day you were born. So, in the name of love, open your heart, break down all the barriers you have built around it and set it free. Give yourself the gift of love and sprinkle it everywhere you go. If we would all do that a little bit more today than we did yesterday, what difference do you think that would make for tomorrow?
